Qatar edged the rivals in most of the important departments in the match – 49-40 in attack, 11-5 in block and 4-1 in ace serves. Using a variety of attacking patterns, the winners forced 19 errors from India, while they committed only 11.
India is a dangerous team and as the event progresses, they may upset other teams in the pool. In this view particularly and after Australia overpowered South Korea 3-2 in another pool match, the Qatar’s 3-0 triumph looks quite important.
Middle players Nadir Ababacar, Belal Nabeel Abunabot and skipper Mohammed Ibrahim Saeed also put up a good show. Ababacar chipped in with 13 points and two blocks, Abunabot added 12 points and four blocks, while Saeed secured 11 points and three blocks. No. 4 Renan Rebeiro underlined his presence with seven points and four blocks for the winners.
For India, only two players could manage points in double digits – Jerome Vinith Charles (12 points and one block) and GKS Ammal Akhin (10 points and three blocks)
Qatar head coach Camilo Soto commented after the match: “Team India is a very strong physically. In each set, they did well in high balls, pushing constantly towards our service. We understood well where our balls would be going and had a good performance in the block. We are very happy to win at the end.”
Qatar captain Saeed said: “It was a tough game because it’s not easy to play at 10 O’clock in the morning, especially when you are facing teams at a high level. India’s a pretty good team as we’ve played against them many times. We just had to try and not give them any chance to go forward.”
India head coach G.E. Sridharan said: “It was a good match. My boys played very well but Qatar were superior to us. I am satisfied with my players’ performance even though we lost 3-0. Tomorrow, we will again try our best because we are here to show our performance.”
India captain Vinit Kumar said: “Qatar played very well today. We tried our best and will try to do better in the upcoming matches.”
