The Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani and the Father Emir HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani led the nation in celebrating the National Sport Day on Tuesday.
The Emir visited Qatar Sport Federation for Special Needs in Al Duhail and witnessed activities by members of the federation and Asian Games champions.
The Father Emir and Qatar Foundation Chairperson HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser participated in events held by Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development.
Activities to mark the National Sport Day began with a march by Qatar Olympic Committee on the Doha Corniche. Dignitaries, representatives from ministries, public and private institutions, athletes, citizens and residents attended the march that started from the Doha Sheraton Hotel and ended at the Athletes’ Village.
Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) had made elaborate preparations to turn the country into a stadium. All sports facilities across the country were open for the masses. All government and private institutions organised events to celebrate the Sport Day.
The joint committee to oversee the Sport Day celebrations had identified locations of activities hosted by the government institutions.
Some 208 institutions came up with a variety of sports activities, including 12 awareness lectures at Aspire, Katara, Al Wakra Club, Al Khor, and the Women’s Sport Committee. The venues included ministries and government bodies’ premises, the Corniche, Aspire Zone, Qatar Foundation, The Pearl, Katara, MIA Park, all sports clubs, facilities and public parks.
The QOC hosted several activities and competitions, including sailing, rowing, canoeing and kayaking on the Corniche. The QOC organised the”Be Fit” competition aimed at spreading awareness about obesity.
QOC Secretary-General HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman al Thani praised the initiative of the Emir and underlined that the Sport Day is in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. He expressed happiness over the unprecedented turnout of citizens and residents, and their eagerness to celebrate the Sport Day.
