The nine-day International Referee Candidate Course concluded in Doha last week. The programme, conducted by FIVB Rules of the Game Commission President Sandy Steel, saw the participation of 18 officials, including three from Qatar.
Innovation and technology have become key markers of volleyball’s progress and the course dealt in detail about it. The importance of technology in aiding referees was also highlighted during the course in which Qatar Volleyball Association Referees Commission President Ibrahim Al Naama and former international referee Milan Labasta made their presentations.
“As part of our extensive development, we do host such courses regularly. The course in Doha primarily aimed to develop the level of officiating and improve and update referees’ knowledge and competence. This exchange of information will be useful for the referees in the long run,” said Steel.
QVA President Khalid Ali Al Mawlawi also endorsed the use of technology in assisting refereeing decisions.
“We aren’t afraid of what’s new. We encourage new thinking, ideas and technologies, and are all for exploring new ways to improve our sport,” said Al Mawlawi.
