World No. 1 beach volleyball pair Cherif Younousse and Tijan Ahmed of Qatar emerged champions in the inaugural Volleyball World’s Beach Pro Tour tournament in Rosarita, Mexico, on Sunday. The Qataris defeated the World No. 5 pair of Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands 21-17, 21-15 in the final. The tournament has replaced FIVB’s World Tour from this year and features only the world’s top 16 players.“It’s a great feeling to win the first Elite 16 tournament of the Beach Pro Tour,” said Younousse. “This tournament was so hard, every match felt like a final and it had an Olympics level. It was another opportunity to prove we’re one of the best teams in the world. Mexico has been bringing great luck to us as we made it to the final three times last year in Cancun and now here. Rosarito will be forever in my heart.”“It was a tough tournament and a difficult week, but we kept on fighting,” said Ahmed. “If you want to win, you’ve to give it your all and that’s what we did. It was a great experience playing against the best teams in the world,” he said.
