Qatar Sports Club, the third most successful outfit after 21-time champions Al Arabi Club and 11-time champions Al Rayyan Club, booked a spot in the prestigious Emir’s Cup Volleyball Championship with a straight triumph over Al Khor Club on Sunday.
At the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiya Arena in Al Sadd, the former four-time champions Qatar Sports Club cruised to a 25-19 25-12 27-25 victory and earned the right to clash with defending champions Al Arabi Club for a place in the semi-finals.
Sukhinin was the best player and had 16 points with 12 of them coming from smashes. He was supported by well by Nicola Vasic (9), Mahdi Samoud (7) and Othman (6), which pushed Qatar Sports Club to win in one hour and two minutes.
Lopez also secured 16 points for Al Khor to emerge the best scorer. But his teammates Alberto De La Rosa (7) and Yamal (6) could not manage more points and keep their team into contention.
This was their fourth successive victory over the opponents in the season and a first triumph in three sets. They had won the QVA Cup clash 3-1 and followed it up with 3-2 and 3-1 wins in the two League clashes.
Qatar Sports Club, who figured in nine finals with their last appearance being in the 2009-10 season when they lost to Al Rayyan, faced some spirited resistance from Al Khor before bagging the opening set at 19.
They displayed their best form in the second as they stormed to a big lead and went on to clinch it at just 12.
However, the third set brought the toughness out of Qatar Sports Club and they quickly ended the challenge of Al Khor in the extra points to complete the 3-0 score line.
On May 4, Police will take on Al Gharafa Club at 4.30 pm, while Al Arabi Club are pitted against Qatar Sports Club 6.30 pm.
