George Wanderley and Vitor Felipe beat Qatar’s Julio Cesar Do Nascimento Jr and Ahmed Tijan yesterday to win gold at the Espinho 2-Star event on Praia da Baia beach in Portugal.
The Brazilian pair defeated the Qatari duo 2-0 (21-12, 21-13) to win their first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour medal since they teamed up at the start of the year.
“It’s very good, it’s the first time we won a senior international event,” Wanderley said. “I won the U19 World Championships in Portugal and now we’ve won the Espinho Open. “We felt at home and celebrated as if we were in Brazil, due to the support we felt throughout the tournament and today in the finals.”
Norway’s Anders Berntsen Mol and Mathias Bertsen also won their first World Tour medals as a pair when they claimed bronze with a 2-0 (22-20, 21-15) victory over compatriots Christian Sorum and Svein Solhaug.
Earlier in the day, Julio and Tijan blanked Sorum and Solhaug 2-0 (21-18, 23-21) in their semi-final match for a place in the decider.
