Qatar is expected to field four teams at the Qatar Open, the eighth of the 11-leg FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, to be held at the Al Gharafa beach courts from November 4 to 8. Qatar will be hosting an FIVB beach volleyball event for the first time.
Arab champions Jefferson Pereira and Tiago Santos will carry the hopes of Qatar.
“We hope to expand the scope and reach of the sport in Qatar. We’re happy to host one of the 11 Open events the FIVB organizes this year. I’m sure the tournament will give a huge facelift to the sport in the country,” said Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) General Secretary Mohammed Ali Al Mohannadi.
The last time Qatar fielded two teams was during the Durban Beach Volleyball Open in South Africa in December, ’13. Thamer Issa and Abdulaziz Khalouf represented the second Qatar team back then. The duo, who had finished third in the Arab Championship, is likely to represent the country once again.
Al Mohannadi believes the sport will enjoy a further boost once the QVBA, which has been set up adjacent to the court in Gharafa, becomes fully functional.
