The FIVB World Tour moves to Doha, Qatar this week for a men’s FIVB Beach Volleyball Open. The event, which will take place from November 4-8, is the penultimate Open event of the year, before the Mangaung Open in South Africa from 9-14 December. It will be the first FIVB World Tour event hosted by the capital city of Qatar.
The Qatar Open begins just two days after the end of the Paraná Open in Argentina, which saw Canada’s Josh Binstock/Sam Schachter claim men’s gold, while Brazil’s Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes claimed their fourth consecutive gold medals in the women’s competition.
Doha is located on the coast of the Arabian Gulf and has a population of over 1 million. It is Qatar’s largest city, with over 60% of the nation’s population residing in Doha or its surrounding suburbs, and is also the economic center of the country. The city held the largest ever Asian Games in 2006, the 2011 Pan Arab Games and the 2011 AFC Asian Cup and will welcome the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
Implemented in 2013, the format of all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments – whether FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam or FIVB Beach Volleyball Open – is the same, featuring pool play followed by single elimination knockout rounds.
