Al Rayyan Club got a jolt before recovering to beat Al Wakra Club in four sets in the Qatar Volleyball Association League in Doha on Monday.
At the QVA Hall, Al Rayyan Club dropped a set in extended points. The Lions kept facing a spirited resistance from the rivals but managed to clinch full three points with a 24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 25-14 victory in 106 minutes.
In another match, Al Ahli Club posted their third victory in five matches when they beat a winless Al Khor Club by 25-20, 27-25, 25-18 in 70 minutes.
Vetkovic, with commendable support from Nikola and Edin, clinched the opening set at 26-24 from unbeaten Al Rayyan Club. However, Al Rayyan Club took some time to regain their rhythm and they were in full cry in the fourth and last set before posting their fifth victory in a row.
Four players scored in double digits for Al Rayyan Club, for whom this was the second win in four sets. They took their points tally to 14, while for Al Wakrah, this was their third loss in five matches.
Bermudez was the top scorer for the winners with 18, including 13 from attack. Marcus had 14 out of 15 from spikes, while Boroniak collected 14 and Bilal added 11. Milos and Ahmed had seven each.
For Al Wakrah, Vetkovic was the most impressive in the match with 24 out of 25 through his fine spiking. Nikola and Edin were other main scorers with 10 and 9, respectively.
Al Ahli Club had a good start and led 8-2 in the opening set before they clinched it at 25-20. In the second again, they led by a small margin but trailed 20-21 before taking it in extra points. In the third, they did not allow Al Khor to trouble them and led all the way to wrap it up in 70 minutes.
Geraldo and Driss were the principal scorers for Al Ahli Club with 19 and 13, respectively. Igor led Al Khor with 11 and he was followed by Mustafa (10) and Asim (9).
